GULBARGA: The Vivekananda Kusta Seva Samiti, started in a humble way by social activist Venkatesh Gurunayak at a leprosy colony in Bijapur in 1985 to provide residential education to the children of leprosy-afflicted parents, is celebrating its silver jubilee. The samiti is running a full-fledged hostel for boys and girls on a two-acre plot in the temple town of Deval Gangapur in Afzalpur taluk and an orphanage Nanda Gokula in Gulbarga. Celebrations will be held in Bijapur on May 29, at Deval Gangapur on June 11 and in Gulbarga on June 12. There are 75 children, including 35 girls, at the Deval Gangapur hostel. Nanda Gokula provides shelter to 19 children, including five girls from Banjara tandas in Chincholi taluk of Gulbarga district, who were rescued from adoption centres in Andhra Pradesh. The parents of children housed at the Deval Gangapur hostel migrate to cities, such as Mumbai, Delhi and Bangalore, and stay there for most part of the year. Mr. Gurunayak said that as part of the silver jubilee celebrations, the samiti proposed to create a corpus of Rs. 25 lakh and inaugurate an old-age home.
