The girl, who cannot hear and speak, lost her parents recently and was literally on the street with no hope for the future
A good samaritan:M. Veerammal, along with N.S. Velayutham, who has come forward to take care of her education in Srivilliputtur. SRIVILLIPUTTUR: Poverty was not new to M. Veerammal, who was born to parents, who lived on catching snakes. Adding to her misery was her physical inability to speak and hear. Though living in a small tent made of plastic covers on a road side, this 12-year-old had her parents to take care, till recently. But, last week both of them died on the same day, reducing her to an orphan. The girl was literally on the street with no hope of her future. However, fate had some fortune in store for her. An official of a nationalised bank, N.S. Velayutham, who came to know about the ill-fate of the girl through his friends, has come forward to educate and take care of her health. Mr. Velayutham has promised the girl's relatives, who are also very poor, of admitting her in a deaf and dumb school in Sivakasi. He has assured to bear all the boarding, education and other expenses. “It will not be much. I can bear the Rs. 2,000 or Rs. 3,000 a month to educate the girl,” he said. The poor girl had been going to a nearby school and attending classes, though she cannot follow everything taught there. She picked up writing skills. “She has beautiful hand writing,” said Mr. Velayutham. For the Rotarian, Velayutham, helping the poor and the needy in all possible ways has been a habit. He has donated around Rs. 2 lakh he had got in a family function for the benefit of the physically challenged in the past. He has also been helping five poor children in their education. “My first priority is to help the girl complete her school education. We can plan other things afterwards,” he said.
