Man arrested for murder of girl

Staff Reporter

TIRUPATTUR: The Jolarpet police on Wednesday arrested a 24-year-old man for murdering a 16-year-old girl at Annadapatti.

After initially filing a case of suspicious death, the police have changed it into a murder case.

According to a police officer attached to the Jolarpet police station, Shanaz Banu, a resident of Annadapatti, was missing since April 18. She was found dead in a well on April 21 and the police registered a case of suspicious death.

Following an inquiry, the police found that the girl had been murdered.

The officer said that Banu was in love with Ranjith alias Ranjith Kumar of Ambedkar Nagar near Annadapatti for nearly one-and-a-half-years. Banu was studying in Class XI in a government school at Tirupattur, while Kumar was engaged in carpentry work in Chennai.

“He had warned her over phone not to talk with boys a month ago. On April 18, they met at a desolate place and Kumar quarrelled with her for talking with boys. When he slapped her, Banu fell down. Kumar then strangulated her and threw her body into an old well at Periya Erikkarai. Following inquiry, Kumar confessed to have murdered the girl. He was arrested and remanded," the officer said.
