Leopard cats released into city zoo

Central Zoo Authority approves addition of a few more species

HYDERABAD: Giving a further boost to the collection of species at the Nehru Zoological Park, a pair of Leopard Cats has been released in the display area for visitors.

The pair was acquired from the Sepahijala Zoo of Tripura last month under a Central Zoo Authority (CZA) approved exchange programme. After completing the mandatory health monitoring and quarantine period, the pair has been shifted to visitor area in the Nocturnal Animal House on Tuesday. Last week, the authorities moved into the display area two species, a pair of Himalayan Black Bear and another pair of Pig Tailed Macaque which too were brought from the Tripura Zoo.

Apart from the three new ones, the Nehru Zoological Park would soon be getting few more species for which a formal approval had been received from the CZA. These include a pair of rhinoceros from Sanjay Gandhi Botanical and Zoological Garden in Patna and pairs of guar, hyena and hippopotamus from Mysore Zoo. The city zoo in return would be providing them Asiatic lions, white tigers and green iguana as part of the exchange programme.

Meanwhile, a sacred baboon at the zoo was adopted by Aditi Sharma of Banjara Hills. The adoption programme of the zoo has interested persons providing an amount for the upkeep of a selected animal for a certain period. According to the zoo officials, Ms. Sharma had paid a sum of Rs.10,000 for adoption of the baboon.
