CUTTACK: A lower court here on Thursday convicted three brothers of Pareswar Sahi of the city in a murder case and sentenced them to undergo life imprisonment. Tanmay Patra alias Tanu, Binay Patra alias Mentalia and Bijay Patra alias Menthu were arrested for murdering a gangster Ranjan Kumar Mahala alias Godhi about four years ago. Cuttack district first additional district judge B. Kar, who conducted the trial for last two years, found the siblings guilty of killing Godhi by hurling bombs at him on August 17, 2007. A severely injured Godhi was shifted to the SCB Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment. The Patra brothers were arrested under Section 302 and 34 of IPC and section 9-B of Explosives Act. The trial court gave the verdict after examining 14 prosecution witnesses. The convicts were awarded life term and a fine of Rs. 20,000 each. They were also sentenced to undergo another two years of rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs. 2,000 each under Explosives Act. Both the sentences have to run concurrently. Godhi was having 25 cases pending against him in almost all police stations in the city. He was also booked under NSA once. He was also a key associate of gangster Raja Acharya who is now serving a life sentence for murdering judo coach Biranchi Das in Bhubaneswar.
