KULITHALAI: A spate of diarrhoea cases and complaints of stomach ache, have been reported from Kulithalai area sending a chill down the spine of Department of Public Health officials and forcing them to scurry over to the affected areas to carry out measures over the past couple of days. On Wednesday four persons were admitted to the Government Hospital here with complaints of diarrohea and stomach ache and on Thursday another five persons were treated for similar ailments. Of them two were being treated as in patients while the rest went home after undergoing preliminary tests and treatment. All of them were from the Periya Palam and neighbouring localities of Kulithalai. On Friday five more persons were treated at the GH here for similar complaints though only two of them were from the Periya Palam area while the rest three were from Lalapet, Mayanur and Pappakkapatti villages. Sensing trouble a team of medical officials and paramedics visited the affected localities over the past two days and carried out a series of investigations. Following that they advised the residents of the locality to follow personal hygiene, proper public sanitation measures besides asking them to consume only boiled water. They also distributed medicines to avoid outbreak of communicable diseases. Karur District Revenue Officer T. Pitchaiah, Kulithalai Revenue Divisional Officer Marimuthu and Tahsildar Nehru were among those who visited the affected areas and held discussions with the public. Senior officials from the Department of Public Health were camping in the localities affected by diarrohea and stomach ache to monitor the situation and ensure immediate medical attention in times of crisis. Special medical teams dispatched to collate details on couple of deaths in recent time in the area traced the deaths of a few individuals to causes other than diarrhoea and stomach. Sources said that while one man died of complications arising from asthma and cardiac problems, a woman affected by HIV also died in the recent past after getting admitted to the Kulithalai GH.
