Akshaya Tritiya sales volume doubles at Head Post Office
Staff Reporter
Namakkal: Sale of gold coins and gold bars at the Namakkal Head Post Office (HPO) for Akshaya Tritiya has gone up by more than two and a half times this year compared to the volume of gold sold for the occasion in the year 2010.
Head Post Master P.K. Ramasamy said that they sold 502.5 grams (worth about Rs. 12 lakh) on Friday against sale of less than 200 grams last year.
He attributed the demand for the gold to the attractive schemes announced by the Postal Department – 0.5 grams free for purchase of 10 grams or discount of six percent.
Schemes
These schemes that were offered only for government servants last year but have been extended to the common man, the HPM added.
The Namakkal HPO has also crossed the targeted sale of 600 grams for this season (from April 12 to June 30, 2011) by selling 730 grams till Friday.
According to him, demand for one gram gold coins was much higher than demand for other denominations such as 5, 8 and 10 gram coins and bars.
There was good demand for bigger gold bars as a total four 50 gram gold bars were also sold on that day.
