125 years of horse race commemorated

Udhagamandalam: With a call given to join the Madras Race Club (MRC) in commemorating 125 years of horse racing in this hill station, hundreds of people including many tourists flocked to the race course in the heart of the town on Saturday.

Consequently the venue which was decorated suitably by the MRC wore a festive look. Following the chairman of the club M.A.M. Ramasamy exhibiting considerable enthusiasm in commemorating the occasion in a fitting manner, appropriate arrangements had been made. They included a special race for the Post Centenary Silver Jubilee Cup and a lucky draw.

The Nilgiris Collector Archana Patnaik who gave away the Post Centenary Silver Jubilee cup and the prizes to the winners of the lucky draw said such landmark occasions should be widely propagated.

Committee member of the MRC Mohamed Javeed Ghatala described it as a historic occasion and expressed the hope that the spectator sport will play a bigger role in promoting tourism here.

Member, MRC, Ramesh Jagtiani said no other hill station in the country can boast of such a facility. Pointing out that like many other unique features of the hill station racing was a legacy of the British, he said that in a place steeped in tradition it occupied an important position. The Secretary, MRC, B.K. Amanullah Khan, said that the celebration had evoked a good response.It showed that racing has always been an integral part of life in the hills.
