BHUBANESWAR: Several college students on Saturday donned the role of social workers and went around anganwadi centres, oldage homes and orphanages to bring smile on faces of unprivileged ones. The occasion was International Day of Service and students and activists were charged up to do their bit on the day. The event was flagged off at the Bakul Children's Library in the presence of Arti Ahuja, Secretary of Women and Child Development, which partnered with city-based Bakul Foundation in the State. Activities ranging from story telling to story construction and games to dance were organised in front of 60 kids from the Madhurmayee Ashram for children of convicts. “Most of the volunteers were college students. There were also some corporates who got their employees to volunteer. While Infosys employees conducted activities at eight Anganwadi centres, employees of Standard Chartered Bank spent time in Subhadra Mahtab Sishugrah,” Shivangi Garg, an engineering student. “Activities were organised in 28 anganwadis and 11 Orphanages in Bhubaneswar, and 5 Anganwadis and 5 orphanages in Cuttack. This involved about 500 volunteers. In total, activities happened in 25 cities across the country with more than 1000 volunteers,” Shivangi said. There is a student group called We4You, which is also partnering us and helping mobilise youth for the event.
