BANGALORE: Hundreds of Meru cab drivers, at loggerheads with the management, took out a protest rally here on Saturday. The confrontation between the drivers, who are demanding better wages and working conditions, boiled over on April 30 when the drivers set several vehicles on fire. They are pressing for the release of 30 drivers arrested for vandalism. Shankar Mayappa, general secretary of the Meru Cab Drivers Association, said: “The company promised us daily wage of Rs. 2,000. However, most of us don't make that much in a day. We also have to remit a compulsory subscription fee of Rs. 950 to the company every day. It becomes extremely difficult for us to manage our livelihood this way.” The drivers also fear that the introduction of 200 new cabs will make it more difficult for them to get fare. “By adding more cabs, they are threatening our chances of getting customers,” he added. They have decided to continue the protests till a settlement is reached. The company suspended its operations two days ago.
