Officials to give intimation to educational institutions before verification

Nagercoil: Scholarship for beedi workers' children is given from Labour Welfare Organisation, Ministry of Labour, every year. Beedi workers are given a passbook by the managements concerned and they are covered under employees provident fund scheme. They are also given an identity card by the management under beedi workers' welfare fund.

In order to avail themselves of medical and other welfare facilities under the Labour Welfare Organisation, Labour Welfare Organisation, had already issued identity cards to the beedi workers. According to Deputy Welfare Commissioner, D. Job Prince, while scrutinising the scholarship applications and inspecting certain establishments at North Arcot district, it was understood that some of the beedi contractors had signed the scholarship applications for the wards of non-beedi workers.

Hence, it has been decided to thoroughly verify and provide the scholarship only to the passbook holders and the employees covered under EPF scheme. The officials of Labour Welfare Organisation have been advised to verify the last year provident fund slip and also passbook to confirm that the children of beedi workers were only benefited under the scheme.

The officials would give advance intimation to the educational institutions before carrying out the verification.

All the heads of educational institutions, beedi workers, wards of beedi workers and trade union leaders were requested to extend full co-operation to carry out the verification and to avoid receipt of scholarship by non-beedi workers from the beedi workers welfare fund, said Mr. Job Prince.
