Textile exporters seek protection

‘Industry reeling from a steep increase in the price of yarn.'

KANNUR: The Kerala Textile Exporters' Organisation (KTEO) has called for the intervention of the Union and the State governments to protect the textile industry that is reeling from a steep increase in the price of yarn.

The annual general body meeting of the organisation held here on Monday urged the State and the Centre to take creative steps to reverse the damage caused to the industry by the increase in the price of yarn.

Textile exporters who attended the meeting pointed out that a substantial quantity of the yarn from spinning mills in the State was not used in Kerala, forcing the weavers to depend on yarn mills in other States.

This trend should be corrected to ensure the availability of yarn of good quality for the State's textile weaving units, a press release issued by the KTEO said here on Tuesday.

The meeting raised concerns over the delay in setting up key infrastructure projects in the district, including a container freight station, Urban Haat scheme that envisages setting up of permanent marketing infrastructure for local crafts and handlooms, and common facilities at the textile park at Nadukani, near Taliparamba. It demanded that the governments take steps to expedite the work under the schemes.

The meeting demanded that the Coastal Marine Service from Azhikkal port here to the newly opened Vallarpadam Container Transshipment Terminal should be given priority as traffic congestion on roads was affecting the smooth transport of cargo to the ports.

Financial support for the handloom sector was sought to be extended to private units to help them survive the current crisis.

The meeting reiterated the demands for special economic zones and the integrated textile park and handloom village here.

The following were elected office-bearers for 2011-12: C.C. Jayachandran (president); Pala Balan (secretary), K.T. Ramakrishnan (vice-president), K.V. Divakar (joint secretary) and Suryakanth Purushotham (treasurer).
