Some solace from Kanyakumari

Staff Reporter

Nagercoil: Even as an anti-Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK)-Congress wave swept the State by giving landslide victory to the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) throughout the State in the Assembly elections, results of which were announced on Friday, people in Kanyakumari district gave a different verdict.

While the Congress won three of the six Assembly segments in the district — Colachel, Vilavancode and Killiyoor, DMK retained Padmanabhapuram and the AIADMK won two.

Unlike other constituencies in the State, the district is considered to be Congress bastion, and it was proved right.

The DMK chief M. Karunanidhi used to say that ‘Nellai Enathu Ellai and Kumari Enathu Thollai' to emphasise that his party's fortunes extended till the boundary of Tirunelveli district, and Kanyakumari a pain. But, on the contrary, this Assembly verdict shows that Kanyakumari district gave some solace to the DMK since the party and its allies have won four seats — Pushpa Leela Alben (DMK) who retained Padmanabhapuram and three other constituencies by Congress candidates, S.Vijayadharani (Vilavancode), S. John Jacob (Killiyoor) and J.G. Prince (Colachel).

AIADMK candidates A. Nanjil Murugesan and K.T. Patchaimal were elected from Nagercoil and Kanyakumari Assembly segments respectively.

It was a humiliating defeat for the candidates of Bharatiya Janata Party — its State president Pon. Radhakrishnan who contested from Nagercoil. One of the popular faces of Communist Party of India (Marxist), R.Leemarose, contested from Vilavancode only to be defeated by a newcomer S.Vijayadharani by the highest margin of 23,789 votes in the district.

Mr. Nanjil Murugesan, Dr. Pushpa Leela Alban, Mr. Prince and Ms.Vijayadharani are new entrants from the district to the State Assembly.

Of the 69 candidates who contested in the six Assembly segments, 52 lost their deposits.
