Arrival of tourists to Rameswaram doubles

Special Correspondent

RAMESWARAM: Though Rameswaram is known for temple tourism in the State, tourists are flocking the island since the onset of summer, highlighting the potential of the town to woo tourist of all interests.

Arrival of large number of tourists on an auspicious day is no surprise as far as Rameswaram is concerned considering its religious importance. But of late, the arrival is increasing gradually even during non season. The town is flocked by tourists from different parts of the State as well as other States. On weekends and holidays it is witnessing huge crowds.

According to the Tourism Department, the arrival since the mid of April has almost doubled than the normal period. As against the usual daily arrival of 3,000 to 5,000 persons, it is getting 7,000 to 10,000 tourists during the current summer. The four-wheelers carrying tourists from far away places have also increased correspondingly. The crowd is likely to increase further in the days to come.

Though the tourists are arriving from different parts of the State and neighbouring States, it is Kerala, which is sending a large number of tourists to Rameswaram. Ground reports suggest that the change in mindset towards exploring destinations is the main reason for the increase in arrival of tourists to places like Rameswaram in summer, which is not a cool place to visit.

“The arrival graph is going up slowly and steadily to Rameswaram. We have received information that the arrival has doubled than in the normal season. We see there is a change in interest of the people to spend time in different places whenever they get an opportunity for vacation,” says M. Balasubramaniam, Tourism Officer, Rameswaram.

He added that they wanted to explore different tourist destinations whether it was summer vacation places or pilgrims and heritage tourist centres or beach tourist destinations. The places of interest in Rameswaram such as agni theertham shore, Sri Ramanathaswamy temple, Ramar “patham,” Pamban bridge and others have been visited by the tourists. Most of the tourists, who visit Rameswaram, never return without taking holy bath at 22 bathing ghats (holy theerthams).

Large turnout of tourists means that it is a good time for the hotels, restaurants, eateries and tough time for the tourists with poor services and expensive rates.
