Gowda qualifies for Olympics

NEW DELHI: Discus thrower Vikas Gowda threw to his second best ever mark of 64.89 metres while claiming the bronze in the invitational meet at Chula Vista, California, US, last Thursday.

The US-based Gowda, who had already qualified for the World championships, with his 63.69m in the Commonwealth Games, thus became the first Indian athlete to make the grade for the London Olympics next year.

He had crossed the qualifying standard for the Olympics (63.00m) at a meet in La Jolla, California, on April 23 last, with a 63.13m, but the qualification period for the London Games began only on May 1.
