Engineering college managements seek fee hike

Staff Reporter

KOCHI: The Self-Financing Engineering College Managements Association has demanded that the fee for the engineering course be increased by Rs.25,000 in seats allocated under the government quota in its affiliated colleges for the new academic year.

A general-body meeting of the association here on Tuesday rejected the announcement made by the Admission Supervisory Committee for Professional Colleges that the last year's fee structure would be retained in these colleges in the academic years 2011-12 and 2012-13.

Unilateral

T.A. Vijayan, general secretary of the association, termed the committee's decision unilateral.

He said that before deciding to retain the fee structure, the committee had not sought any details of the expenditure incurred by the managements.

Beyond mandate

Mr. Vijayan said the committee had powers only to check if the managements were collecting capitation fee.

The managements had entered into an agreement with the government for admission during the past two years. The committee had later ratified the fee structure agreed upon by the government and the managements.

The association representatives said that they would conduct an entrance test to fill 20 per cent of the seats available under the lateral-entry quota in each college.

Entrance test

The association would conduct an entrance test to admit candidates who had not qualified in the engineering entrance examination conducted by the Commissioner for Entrance Examinations.
