MCD schools to get biometric attendance system

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: After having introduced a biometric system of attendance for its employees in 2008 to bring in more transparency and check absenteeism, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi is now planning to extend the same to its schools to ensure that teachers report to work on time. The system would be in place by July end and would impact close to 20,000 teachers on the pay rolls, according to civic body officials.

In addition, to keep a day-to-day record of midday meals served in its schools, the MCD has decided to monitor the data online as part of the civic agency's plan to introduce e-governance in its schools. Last year, the civic body had suspended 18 regular teachers including a principal for absenteeism and dereliction of duty after carrying out an inspection.

MCD Education Committee chairman Mahender Nagpal said: “It was found that a number of teachers either report late to school or often mark their attendance and then leave for the day. Through this biometric system attendance would be marked at regular intervals to ensure they remain in school during the official hours.”

For its mid-day meal scheme the civic agency's education department would record number of meals served and number of students who have attended classes on that particular day. All figures would be entered online so that any bungling of funds can be identified in a transparent manner.

Mr. Nagpal said: “We have already started installing computers in its schools for the purpose. The administration of each school would be given the task of tallying the numbers.”
