Easing move:Corporation personnel taking away the two wheelers parked at no parking zone of Tirunelveli new bus-stand at Vaeinthankulam on Thursday.

TIRUNELVELI: Following complaints from the public on the haphazard parking of bikes and cycles in the ‘No parking zone' of the new bus-stand at Vaeinthankulam here, the corporation swung into action on Thursday to seize 35 two-wheelers and 17 cycles.

Moreover, the encroachment eviction drive, which was headed by City Engineer K.P. Jai Xavier and Executive Engineer V. Narayanan Nair also led to the removal of the make-shift eateries erected on the platforms and several dozens of crates with fruits, all kept on the walkers' path hindering the free movement of the commuters.

After the Tirunelveli Corporation took over the new bus-stand two-wheeler parking bay under its control from a private contractor and introduced smartcards to make the parking bay public-friendly, the urban civic body is getting a whopping annual revenue of over Rs. 30 lakh. The local body provided cement platforms with metal roofing to ensure the safety of the two-wheelers parked in the bay.

To ensure orderliness on the bus-stand premises, it was announced that the bikes and cycles being parked in the ‘No parking zones' would be seized and the owners could get back their vehicles only after paying the fine.

However, the ‘No parking zones' of the new bus-stand continue to overflow with two-wheelers and the bicycles of the visitors.

Against this backdrop, the corporation officials, who came to the Vaeinthaankulam new bus-stand with two tipper lorries, seized all the bikes and cycles parked in the ‘No parking zones' in chaotic fashion.

The officials turned their attention towards the traders, who used to keep their gas stoves, LPG cylinders and a table to prepare snacks, plastic crates with fruits, trash etc. on the platform.

Even before the erring traders could sense the action, the corporation personnel, backed by police led by Perumalpuram Inspector Ponnarasu, seized everything kept on the platform.
