Two Sri Lankan boats seized, 10 fishermen held

Special correspondent

CHENNAI: Indian Coast Guard ship Sarang on Tuesday night apprehended two Sri Lankan boats with 10 fishermen for fishing in Indian waters illegally. They were carrying about 3,500 kg of fish.

According to a Coast Guard release, ‘Dushantha Putha' and ‘Madhu' had set sail from Dondra and were apprehended while fishing very close to the Indian coast. They were brought to Kasimedu fishing harbour for being handed over to the police on Thursday. This is the fifth such incident in 2011. So far 10 boats with 50 crew members and 9,200 kg of fish have been apprehended by the Coast Guard Region (East).

The present seizure is part of an extensive sea-air operation launched by the Coast Guard on the eastern seaboard. According to the release, the regular presence of Sri Lankan fishing boats in Indian waters is a matter of concern and the Coast Guard regional headquarters in Chennai has taken up the case with appropriate authorities.
