Minister asks ryots to choose crops carefully

GADWAL: Minister for Information D.K. Aruna asked farmers to choose crops carefully visualising the demand for the next season.

Addressing farmers at Rythu Chaitanya meeting at Maldakal near Gadwal in Mahabubnagar district on Friday, she said farmers are often carried away by the demand in the previous season and increase the crop size abnormally resulting in slump.

Instead farmers should go for mixed basket of crops so that at least one or two commodities fetch good price. Prices and yield play a key role in ensuring decent returns to farmers.

She called upon farmers to think of cultivating vegetables which gave them instant returns and help society meet its nutritional needs. A farmer owning two milch cattle could earn Rs. 10,000 per month and support the family. The Minister said vegetable seed was supplied at 90 per cent subsidy. Quality vegetables have market at national level too, she said

She cautioned the shepherds to go for insurance cover to insulate themselves from losses in case of death of the sheep in large numbers during natural calamities. The Minister announced that the government extended the crop compensation scheme to medium and large farmers too who suffered heavy losses during 2009 floods.

An amount of Rs 18.74 crore was released to pay the uncovered farmers. An amount of Rs 4.5 crore was allocated for supply of farm equipment. Seventy two tractors were being supplied at subsidised prices. Gadwal division was given four tractors, she said.

She said bankers had planned in a big way to enhance their lending this year. Also, serious efforts are being made for supply of seed and fertilizer on time, she said.

Joint Director of Agriculture Vinay Kumar, Market Yard Chairman G. Krishna Reddy, PACS presidents Maheswara Reddy, Vikrama Simha Reddy and others were present.
