PUDUKOTTAI: The moderate to sharp showers in parts of the district on Thursday night damaged paddy kept bundled in the fields. Farmers had harvested the produce early in the day and had left home unable to beat the heat in the late afternoon.
Sharp showers accompanied by strong winds and lightning not only resulted in a dip in the mercury level but also caused damage to paddy in village such as Parambur, Annavasal, Chengapatti, Chathiram, Kalladipatti and Navampatti.
Worst hit are the ‘samba' growers in Annavasal and Parambur. S. Saravanan (32) of Annavasal said that the produce harvested in 2.5 acre and left in the fields in the last two days had been partly damaged, especially the crop at the bottom of the bundle that remained wet, as water was stagnant in the fields. He had raised the late ‘samba' crop after the Pongal festival. The duration of the variety was three months. The only solace for him was that he had already taken home the produce harvested on another two acres of his fields.
Apart from the paddy, he also lost the hay, an important fodder for his livestock, worth a few thousand rupees. He did not anticipate the showers, which lasted for less than half-an-hour.
