Uncertainty over proposed college

NAGAPATTINAM: The status on the proposed agricultural college in Keezhvelur is not clear with the change of guard in the State. The proposal for a new Agricultural College and Research Institute in Nagapattinam district under the aegis of Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) was announced by the previous Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam government in its interim budget.
A Government Order was issued to effect the proposal, and a combined foundation-laying was done for the college along with a multitude of other genetic gardens and parks in various places. However, there is no progress on the proposed institute.
Issuing of applications by the TNAU began on May 6, and is scheduled for conclusion on May 30, with the counselling scheduled for mid-June. Its information brochure says B.Sc. (Agriculture) programme will start from this academic year at the proposed institute.
According to sources, a potential site belonging to a temple was considered for creating the infrastructure of the institute prior to the Assembly elections. However, with the new government, the status of the proposal stands frozen and officialdom equally reticent.
When contacted over phone, the office of the Vice-Chancellor, TNAU, Coimbatore, said that they were “yet to receive directions from the new government.”
