Patna: Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Friday launched Bihar's first River Patrolling Police Station (RPPS) on the banks of the Ganga in Patna district.

The RPPS, near Maujipur village under the Fatuha police station, has been built at a cost of Rs. 56 lakh in just two months, official sources said.

The Chief Minister also inaugurated 131 police buildings, including model police stations and newly constructed police stations.

Though the State Government had identified 18 places on the banks of important rivers for setting up of RPPS, it would however start functioning at five places covering a long stretch of the Ganga, the Kosi and the Gandak.

The RPPSs would be set up at Patna Rural (Fatuha), Naugachhia, Bagaha, Supaul and Darbhanga.

The police stations, to be set up either on specialised motorboats or boats, would anchor in diaras or riverbanks as per need and also coordinate with their police outposts established on important ghats, sources said.

Smuggling and illegal ferrying of goods and passengers, boat capsize, drowning of individuals or management of festivals on the river banks would come under the purview of RPPS, the Chief Minister said and added that it would help improve law and order in the State.

Each RPPS would have 45 armed police personnel . - PTI
