Six-month maternity leave hailed

Special Correspondent

MADURAI: The Indian Academy of Paediatrics, Madurai Branch, has welcomed and thanked the Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, for sanctioning six months maternity leave for working women.

“This is the best gift bestowed on a newborn baby of our State.

The Chief Minister has sanctioned for a thoughtful G.O. and it shows the priority given for a child's health,” said J. Sundara Pandian, president, IAP-Madurai Branch, in a press statement here on Thursday.

He said that the majority of State's working women had to deprive their newborn of mother's milk very early after birth because of short duration of maternity leave provided so far.

“The birth right of a child is restored through this initiative and our concern is for a more strong and healthy India. We thank the Chief Minister for accepting our plea to increase the maternity leave period for working women,” Dr. Sundara Pandian said in the statement.
