Commissioner of Police C. Sylendra Babu inaugurated a horse riding training programme at PRS Grounds in the city on Friday. — COIMBATORE: The City Police will soon revive the mounted horse branch by buying 10 horses and necessary formalities in this connection have already been cleared by the department and the government, said City Police Commissioner C. Sylendra Babu on Friday. He added that the City Police earlier had 10 horses in the mounted horse branch and with the death of horses due to age, the unit had not been revived. Now, efforts are on to buy horses and revive the unit. In Chennai, mounted horses are used for patrolling and crowd control in Marina. In Coimbatore city, horses were used for patrolling the walking track on Race Course. Mr. Babu was inaugurating the 10-day horse riding and shooting practice summer camp for students. The shooting practice for students is being imparted by the Coimbatore Rifle Club while horse riding is being conducted by United Royal Riders Equestrian Centre at a concessional rate for the students and City Police are providing the ground. Mr. Babu said that 63 students would undergo the training programme till May 30 from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. and from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Students would be taught trotting and galloping besides various other techniques. This is an unique opportunity, since students will not be able to find a centre for learning the skill and is also a costly affair. In addition to learning the skill, students will be able to overcome fear and gain confidence helping in overall improvement of their personality. With regard to shooting practice at Coimbatore Rifle Club, as many as 100 students have registered. Mr. Babu said that the shooting practice camp was an annual feature. Good performers would be roped in as Rifle Club members, he added.
