Summer camp with a difference

Staff Correspondent

MANGALORE: Around 100 children, who attended “Aata-Paatha” annual camp in the Bajal area of the city, had the unique experience of interacting with presspersons.

This camp has been an annual feature since 2003 when it was organised jointly by the Pakkaladka Yuvaka Mandala and the Pakkaladka unit of the Democratic Youth Federation of India. The camp invites presspersons to interact with the children.

Recalling the visit of a reporter from a daily last year, J.S. Yashmita said the reporter told them what goes into news making. “Reporters collect news and show it to their editor,” she said, taking some time to remember what the reporter's superior is called.

The camp of course, does include activities that children enjoy, including a magic show by Kudroli Ganesh. During the week-long camp, the children learnt a little of singing from Mime Ramdas, mask-making from Hareesh Merna, met a journalist, and enjoyed a magic show on Wednesday by Mr. Ganesh.

On Wednesday, the children saw in awe how a make up artiste transformed a boy into an old man. iCollages- “news-bulletins” made by children at the camp displayed their creativity.
