Standoff between BBMP, cable TV operators

Staff Reporter

Bangalore: The Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike's (BBMP) drive against overhead optic fibre cables (OFCs) has affected even cable TV operators, with the civic staff removing their lines also.

Distraught cable TV operators, who met the civic authorities, said this had affected their services, to which BBMP officials admitted their mistake and promised to help them put up their cables again.

According to Amruth Kumar, general secretary of The Karnataka Cable TV Chamber of Commerce, the discussion was smooth initially. “However, everything went downhill after Yediyur councillor N.R. Ramesh used unparliamentary language.” A “war of words” ensued between the councillors and the cable operators and the latter staged a snap dharna demanding an apology from Mr. Ramesh. It was only after the intervention of Mayor Sharadamma and Deputy Mayor Harish that tempers cooled.

Mr. Ramesh said: “Most gangmen cannot identify the various cables.” He claimed the presence of “a few goons” at the meeting had caused the misunderstanding.
