KOCHI: Mayor Tony Chammany will have a unique group of visitors on Tuesday. A delegation led predominantly by children will meet the Mayor at his chamber at 2 p.m. with the demand to recapture the lost glory of the Perandoor canal. The members of the United Friends Club, an initiative of children below the age of 12 years, have made a short film “Preserve the World for Us,” on the same issue. Taking inspiration from the initiative of children, people from various walks of life have now come together, irrespective of party affiliations, for the cause of reviving the Perandoor canal. On Tuesday, the children will be accompanied by members of Panamppilly Nagar Welfare Association, Panamppilly Nagar Ladies Club, Kerala Management Association, and Better Cochin Response Group. Garbage dump Garbage and plastic waste have been dumped into the canal indiscriminately. After heavy rain, the surrounding areas get flooded with the dirty water from the canal, even polluting drinking water. Children get contagious diseases and many families had to be relocated during heavy rain to escape the water that seeps into houses.
