KOCHI: Roughly 2,000 government job-seekers under about 200 categories of jobs will benefit from the United Democratic Front (UDF) government's decision to extend the validity of the present PSC rank lists. According to PSC sources, close to 2,000 people will gain from the government decision to recommend to the PSC to extend by six months the validity period of rank lists that will otherwise expire by May 31. Sources said these posts were for about 190 categories of jobs for which the PSC had conducted written tests or personal interviews or both. Of these 190 categories, 65 were State-wide positions and the rest district-wide. The State-wide categories included higher secondary school teachers, vocational higher secondary teachers, senior lecturers in medical colleges, health inspectors, and research assistants in certain departments. The number of posts available in the State-wide categories will be 300 to 400. Those in the district-wise categories include: police constables, village men, mazdoor in the Kerala State Electricity Board and junior health inspectors. The vacancies under these categories existed in all the 14 districts and in each district there will be over 100 posts. Because Election Code of Conduct took effect from early March this year, several departments had not reported to the government and the government to the PSC the vacancies that arose in these departments because of the mass retirement of government staff on March 31.
