120 HIV +ve cases detected every month
R. Arivanantham
KRISHNAGIRI: On an average 100 to 120 HIV positive cases are detected every month in Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Namakkal, Salem, Madurai and Theni districts, according G. Karunanidhi, founder member, Tamilnadu Networking People, a non-governmental organisation (NGO) working among HIV/AIDS patients. Mr. Karunanidhi, who is also the project coordinator for Orphan and Vulnerable Children, told The Hindu that the state government should make concerted efforts to combat the disease in these districts. He said rural areas had a high concentration of AIDS cases compared to urban areas. Mr. Karunanidhi alleged that those at the helm of Tamil Nadu Aids Control Society (TANSACS) and its District Aids Control Units (DACUs) were not keen on tackling the disease. He asked the government to revamp TANSACS at the state and district levels. Counsellors at the Integrated Counselling and Testing Centres (ICTCs) at primary health centres and mobile centres did not update themselves and were unequal to the task they were assigned to. Mr. Karunanidhi said the HIV/AIDS affected were between 25 and 45 years.
