MANGALORE: It is very important to take medicines given for HIV on a regular basis, said Dr. Kishor, District AIDS Prevention and Control Unit (DAPCU).

He was speaking as chief guest at an event to mark the International Candlelight Memorial Day in Wenlock Hospital in the city on Tuesday.

The event was organised by Hongirana Network, an association of HIV positive persons, to remember those who have lost their lives to HIV-AIDS and to support the 2.75 lakh people living with HIV in Karnataka.

He said: “Action for the HIV positive is not just for today but for everyday. There is a need to sensitise people about the rights of the HIV positive people.”

All those present at the meet lit candles and observed a minute's silence in memory of those who have succumbed of HIV.

“Some HIV positive people stay at home because of the stigma. But they must not be made to feel hurt,” Mr. Kishor said.

About the treatment, he said they should be mentally strong and do whatever needed to be done.

Seema, District Co-ordinator, Promoting Access to Care and Treatment (PACT), Hongirana Network, said that HIV positive people should be mentally strong as it could help them lead a better life. She said medicines, yoga and work could help
