New Delhi: India on Tuesday created history by advancing to the quarterfinals of the Sudirman Cup badminton tournament thanks to Chinese Taipei's 3-2 defeat of Thailand in the last Group ‘C' tie of the mixed team competition in Qingdao, China. India had lost its opener against Chinese Taipei 2-3, but bounced back in the second Group ‘C' match on Monday, defeating Thailand 3-2, but its fate still depended on the result of the match between Chinese Taipei and Thailand. But Thailand's defeat on Tuesday paved the way for India to enter the knock-out stage of the tournament for the first time since its inception in 1989. Chinese Taipei rode on its strength in doubles as it swept all the three events — men's, women's and mixed — to notch up its second victory and top Group ‘C' of Level 1. The results: China 5 bt Japan 0; Taiwan 3 bt Thailand 2; Singapore 5 bt Canada 0; USA 4 bt The Netherlands 1; Czech Republic 5 bt Slovakia 0; Peru 2 lost to Australia 3; Sweden 4 bt Bulgaria 1; Vietnam 5 bt South Africa 0; Sri Lanka 3 bt Iceland 2; The Philippines 5 bt Seychelles 0 . — PTI
