DINDIGUL: With a successful trial run, the gas-based crematorium at Nagal Nagar will become operational in next 15 days, according to Municipal Chairman S. Natarajan.

Talking to press persons after inspecting the crematorium here on Wednesday, he said that trial run was done successfully.

Temperature was maintained as per requirements to burn the bodies.

All pending works were completed and basic amenities were provided. Infrastructure was upgraded to meet the needs of users.

Now, the crematorium was ready for operation, he added.

The Dindigul Municipality would hand over the crematorium to Nagal Nagar Crematorium Trust for maintenance. With no need for electric power to generate heat to burn the bodies, cost of burning bodies will be much less. The trust will fix the charges for burning the bodies. These things will be finalised within a week, he assured.

Gas generated from it was supplied to a chamber through eight pipes to burn the bodies in a short time. Sprawling over two acres, the crematorium has a burning chamber, big hall for conducting rituals, office room, prayer hall, security room, six toilets, two bathrooms, and a spacious parking lot.

Funding

Initially, a sum of Rs.92 lakh was sanctioned for the project and another Rs.38 lakh was given to complete it. Dindigul MLA K. Balabarathi had contributed Rs.5 lakh from her MLA constituency development fund. All pending minor works were completed.

The project was conceived at an estimated cost of Rs.60 lakh in 2007, but the work started only in 2008.

With sharp escalation of prices of raw materials, the municipality had submitted revised proposals to the government and raised the project cost.

This is the second crematorium for the town.

The gasifier crematorium, constructed at a cost of Rs.1.35 crore at Vedapatti was inaugurated by Municipal Chairman R. Natarajan on March 1. The town has an electric crematorium at R.M. Colony.
