CHENNAI: Cooperation Minister Sellur K. Raju has advised officials of his department to open more pharmacies in the State.
At present, 62 pharmacies are being run by the department, of which 18 are operated by cooperative marketing societies.
Addressing a meeting on Monday to review the working of the Cooperation Department, he said that as drugs were being sold through such pharmacies to people at 12 per cent discount, their sales had gone up.
Chairing another meeting of officials, Food Minister Agri S.S. Krishnamoorthy urged them to ensure that the scheme of free rice supply through the public distribution system is properly carried out.
Among those who attended the meetings were V.K. Jeyakodi, Principal Secretary (Food), and Jatindra Nath Swain, Registrar of Cooperative Societies, an official release said.
