PUDUCHERRY: The Vocational Rehabilitation Centre (VRC) for Handicapped on Thursday began a four-day computer training in JAWS, screen reader software that converts a normal PC into a talking computer, for visually challenged students. As many as 20 visually impaired students are attending the course in the centre situated at Duprayapet.

The training in JAWS (Job Access With Speech) will help the visually impaired to take up jobs in software companies and other computer assisted works, Deputy Director, VRC, Puducherry, T. Mohan said at the inaugural function.

Chairman of the Puducherry chapter of Confederation of Indian Industry Meenakshi Kumar said his organisation is ready to help interested candidates in getting computers. “We are ready to provide any number of computers,” he said.

The CII, along with Rotary Club of Puducherry, would explore the possibility of finding space inside the town to re-locate the centre as the present premises was not easily accessible to the visually impaired, he said. K. Neelakantan, trainer from Research Centre for Visually Impaired, Loyola College, Chennai, said several students with visual impairment were able to get jobs in reputable IT companies and BPOs after lessons in JAWS operation. President-elect of the Rotary Club of Puducherry R. Rajkumar and secretary-elect of the club K Srikanth were present.
