Udhagamandalam: Following complaints mounting about the “shabby job” done on “improving” the main bus stand in Kotagiri, the Kotagiri Citizens Forum has asked the local panchayat to furnish details pertaining to the work done.

Speaking to The Hindu here on Thursday, the Secretary of the Forum, Yasmin Kothawala, said that under the Right to Information (RTI) Act, the panchayat has been asked whether the improvements had been carried out in accordance with a proper approved plan, how much money had been sanctioned and how much spent.

It had also been asked to list the facilities provided for the passengers and those waiting for buses.

Stating that the forum has in a letter sent to the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC) demanded streamlining of bus services in Kotagiri, she lamented that many of the buses were old and rickety.

They subjected the passengers to considerable inconvenience. She also claimed that between 4 and 6 p.m. there were no buses plying to Mettupalayam. Despite representations, the authorities have not taken action against vehicles using air horns. This has considerably increased noise pollution in Kotagiri and surroundings. Adverting to the Nehru Park in the heart of Kotagiri, Ms.Kothawala said that there was confusion over who should maintain it.

Expressing the view that a permanent arrangement should be made and the task of maintaining it be entrusted to the Department of Horticulture, she feared that if the uncertainty is allowed to continue the chances of the facility being misused will increase.
