Customs (Chennai) men triumph

KARUR: Customs (Chennai) men won the L.R.G. Naidu Memorial Cup and South Central Railway (Secunderabad) women bagged the K.C.P. Indirani Memorial Cup in the all-India basketball tournament, organised by the Karur Basketball Club, here on Thursday.

In the men's category, Customs won all its matches in the semifinal league. IOB (Chennai) finished second with two victories, while Indian Air Force (New Delhi) bagged the third spot with a solitary win.

In the last of the semifinal league matches, Customs registered a 79-58 win over IAF. After a slow start, Customs hoopsters bounced back strongly to the level the scores at 34-34 at halftime. They kept the momentum going in the next two quarters to emerge victorious.

In the women's section, South Central Railway (SCR) won all its matches in the four-team league.

Southern Railway (SR), Chennai with two wins and KSEB, Thiruvananthapuram with a solitary victory finished second and third respectively.

SCR defeated SR 62-52 in the final league match. After trailing 25-28 at the halfway mark, SCR cagers stepped up the pace in third session to secure a 44-36 lead and never looked back.

Men: Customs 79 (Saravanarajan 31) bt Indian Air Force 58 (Joginder 15); Customs 76 (Vinoth 29, Saravanarajan 14) bt Customs & Central Excise, Kochi 55 (Manoj 24, Monish Wilson 11); IOB 67 (Mihir Pandey 16, Sateesh Kumar 12) bt Customs & Central Excise, Kochi 40 (Shinumon Augustine 25); IOB 93 (Mihir Pandey 18, Vineeth Revimathen 16) bt Indian Air Force 46 (Praveen 14).

Women: South Central Railway 62 (Aashna 18) bt Southern Railway 52 (Apoorva 13) . — Principal Correspondent
