The police had recovered Rs. 10,16,200 from the arrested, who are believed to be part of a bigger betting racket. Based on a tip-off, the police arrested Raj and Sharavana who were engaged in betting near KSRTC bus-stand in Bhadravati on May 5 and seized Rs. 6,85,500 and two mobile phones from them. Betting Prabhakar and Madan, who were engaged in betting for the match between Mumbai Indians and Kolkotta Knight Riders, were arrested by the police on May 25. Chitresh, Mallikarjun, Imtiaz, Patil, and Pranesh, who were associates of the arrested, had managed to escape. The police seized Rs. 3,30,700 cash, two mobile phones, and two vehicles from the arrested. Superintendent of Police Raman Gupta said the arrested had been booked under Section 78(A) of the Karnataka Police Act and Section 420 of the Indian Penal Code, which dealt with gambling and cheating respectively. The possibility of the arrested persons enjoying links with a wider betting racket was probed, he added. Additional Superintendent of Police M.B. Pavin was present.
