Temporary teachers help improve SSLC results in Villupuram
A.V.Ragunathan
VILLUPURAM: Appointment of temporary teachers to fill up the existing vacancies has helped a great deal in improving the SSLC public examinations results in Villupuram district.
The overall pass percentage in the SSLC has gone up to 80.03 per cent from last year's 73.86 per cent, an increase of 6.17 per cent. Hence, the district has shot up in the educational ladder from the 32nd place to the 29th place.
Chief Educational Officer C.Kuppusamy told The Hindu that at least 1,000 teacher posts fell vacant at the SSLC level and such a situation had a deleterious impact on the overall educational performance of the district. These vacancies were filled up with teachers appointed on a temporary basis, say for four months from December to March, for limited subjects on a consolidated pay of Rs 2,000 a month, and for which the government had sanctioned special funds.
Mr Kuppusamy said however the temporary teacher appointment was not allowed for subjects such as Tamil and Social Sciences. But to tide over the situation headmasters concerned had taken initiative to mobilise funds for paying temporary teachers for those two subjects. Even certain teachers contributed Rs 2,000 each on their birthdays as a goodwill gesture and public contributions too were solicited to mete out the expenses on this score.
