VISAKHAPATNAM: An awareness programme on the ‘Ramayana' was organised jointly by the Gurudev Charitable Trust and the Sanatana Samskruti Vyapti Mandal on the occasion of Hanumath Jayanthi at the Central Prison here on Friday.

Deputy Inspector-General (Visakha Range) Soumya Mishra, who participated as chief guest, felt that these kinds of spiritual programmes would go a long way in reforming prisoners. Describing Lord Hanuman as a ‘good communicator', she said that He had started life as an ardent devotee of Rama but was being worshipped as God for his devotion to Rama. She spoke on the Ramayana and the message it conveyed to the masses.

Central Prison Superintendent G. Jayavardhan underlined the importance of family relations for prisoners.

It was for this reason that they were being sent on parole to spend time with their family members. He regretted that for some reason the SPs of Vizianagaram and Srikakulam districts were not recommending parole to prisoners from their districts.

Ms. Soumya Mishra said that she would discuss the matter with the two SPs.

Vibhag Pracharak of Viswa Hindu Parishad K. Radhakrishna said that the Ramayana was the foundation for a strong family system. It had inculcated discipline and self-conduct among the people.

Deputy Jail Superintendent Rahul, Gurudev Charitable Trust organiser R. Jagadeesh, and constable Narasinga Rao were among those who spoke.

The trust distributed books titled ‘Gita Makarandamu' to those who participated in the programme.
