THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Five records were set on the opening day of the State junior aquatic championships at the Nandiyode swimming pool here on Friday. All five records came in the boys' section with Ernakulam's V. Turbu setting a new mark (29.47s) in the 50m backstroke race in the Group I category. Thiruvananthapuram's S.S. Visakh also set a new mark (2:07.63s) in the Group I category while winning the 200m freestyle event. His team-mate S. Arun figured in the record books by setting a new mark (1:13.40s) in the 100m breaststroke. In the boys' Group II category, Ernakulam's P.S. Roshan set a new mark (1:18.06s) in the 100m breaststroke event and the day's last record was set by the host's S. Anand. He set a new record in the 200m freestyle with a timing of 2:10.44s. Host Thiruvananthapuram was leading the points tally at the end of the first day's competition with 566 points. Ernakulam was second with 266 points. — Principal Correspondent
