Eight killed in two accidents

FATAL PLUNGE:The bus that fell into the Thirumalairajan river at Mudikondan near Tiruvarur on Friday, killing five persons. —

TIRUVARUR / ARIYALUR: Eight persons were killed in two separate accidents in Tiruvarur and Ariyalur districts on Friday.

Five persons, including two women, were killed on the spot and 36 others were injured when a private bus lost control and dashed against the wall of a bridge across Thirumalairajan river at Mudikondan village near Tiruvarur and fell into the river on Friday evening.

The bus was going from Tiruvarur to Chidambaram. As there was no water in the river, the bus hit the sand bed and got crushed.

Bodies of two of the victims have been identified as Karthi (30), driver of the bus, belonging to Vilanthirasamudram near Sirkali, and Nadhiya (20) of Koothanur village, daughter of Ramachandran, a farmer.

As soon as the bus fell into the river, people nearby gathered on the spot and lifted the top portion with a dozer. Later ambulances from various places came to the spot and removed the bodies and injured persons to Tiruvarur Medical College Hospital. Treatment is given to the injured at the hospital.

K. Baskaran, District Collector, P. Moorthy, Superintendent of Police, Sri Raman, Revenue Divisional Officer visited the spot.

The Collector led the rescue operations along with other officials. Later, the Collector visited Tiruvarur Medical College Hospital and consoled the injured persons.

In another accident, three persons were killed near Jayamkondam.

A car in which three persons were travelling tumbled into a dry tank bed by the road side and overturned near Jayankondam during the late hours of Thursday.

They were proceeding from Chennai to Utkottai near Jayankondam along with a few others to attend the marriage of their friend when the driver reportedly lost control.

The names of the deceased were given as Arasumani, Rajeswaran and Suresh. Two other travellers who sustained grievous injuries were said to have been admitted to the Thanjavur Government Medical College Hospital.
