A small irritant to ban

Absence of bypass road towards Natham, Karaikudi is felt, says K. Raju

WAITING FOR AN ALTERNATIVE:Lorries proceeding to Natham parked along Madurai Bypass Road in Dindigul.

Streamlining traffic and imposing a ban on entry of lorries into Dindigul has been welcomed by the residents. But imposing rules without providing a viable alternative has disrupted movement of goods from one place to another in time for some. For instance, entry of lorries into Dindigul has been banned between 8 a.m. and 12 noon and 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. With effective implementation of this order, school and college students and office-goers, using their own vehicles, can travel ithout any threat from sand-laden tipper lorries, water tankers and heavily- loaded lorries. Adequate police have been deployed on all bypass roads around Dindigul to stop lorries from entering the town. Lorries that want to enter the town do not find any difficulty in waiting on the bypass roads for hours. They can reach any destination in the town within a few minutes after 12 noon. But long-distance lorries proceeding to Natham and Karaikudi from Coimbatore, Palani, Oddanchatram, Tiruppur, Pollachi have a tough time because they have to cross the town to reach these places. Dindigul has bypass roads to all southern, western and northern districts. Unfortunately, there is no bypass road to go to Natham and Karaikudi without touching the town. All lorries have to cross Dindigul either through Begampur main road, Anguvilas Irakkam and Nagal Nagar bridge to reach Natham main road or through Vanivilasmedu, Salai Road, Railway Station Road and Nagal Nagar to reach Natham Road.

With the closure of these two roads, all heavy vehicles have to wait for long hours in a long queue on the bypass road.

“The delay affects our business. We are unable to deliver the goods at the assured time,” say lorry operators. Piling of lorries also creates a traffic congestion on the busy Madurai-Tiruchi bypass road.

The lorry operators have appealed to the police to open at least Begampur and Aranmanaikulam Roads to reach Nagal Nagar and proceed further to Natham and Karaikudi. Blocking vehicles without providing an alternative route for lorries is not a wise decision, they feel.
