Organs of Punyavathi, who was declared brain dead, were sent to various hospitals for transplantation

HYDERABAD: A 58-year-old teacher and a resident of Nandyal, Kurnool district, Punyavathi, who was declared brain dead on Thursday, May 26 has given a new lease of life to desperate patients. Organs of the deceased including liver, kidneys, heart valves and eyes were retrieved and sent to various hospitals for transplantation.

The deceased was admitted to a city hospital on May 18 and was put on a ventilator on May 25. Close relatives including younger sister Dr. Lakshmi said that the deceased was suffering from a brain related ailment since this January.

“She was a teacher at Good Shepherd School in Nandyal. She was very generous and even donated her last month's salary to educate the students. We thought it would be fitting that we donate her organs so that she lives-on even after her demise,” relatives said.

According to CEO of Mohan Foundation, K. Raghuram, the relatives were well informed, through various reports in the media, about the Foundation's role in facilitating organ donation in the State. The relatives consulted on taking a decision to donate the organs of the late school teacher.

“In the end, it was a unanimous decision. In fact, Punyavathi's sister, Dr. Lakshmi had an organ donor card and she immediately called us,” Mr. Raghuram said.

The Mohan Foundation authorities started holding counselling sessions and took the consent for donation from relatives.

“The liver, kidneys, heart valves and eyes have been sent to various hospitals for transplantation. The needy patients will benefit immensely from this organ donation,” Mr. Raghuram said.
