Man-animal conflict affects performance of Valparai school

S.P. Saravanan

COIMBATORE: The poor pass percentage at a school in Mudis, Valparai, in the S.S.L.C. examination results announced on Friday is attributed to the man-animal conflict in the area.

Of the 37 students who wrote the examination, only 17 passed. The pass percentage was 46, compared to 58 per cent last year.

The school has a total of 92 students studying in classes VI to XII, but with just eight teaching staff. Class VI remains empty with no student, according to one of the teachers.

There are no teachers for science and social studies subjects for class X and teachers for physics and English for class XII.

Even as the results were announced on Friday, teachers from the school and officials from the Education Department admitted that the fear of wild animals was the reason for the school's performance hitting a new low every year.

The Government Higher Secondary School is located near a graveyard with no compound wall on three sides and is close to a reserve forest.

The location of the school enables leopards to frequent it, keeping students and teachers away. Parents demanded an assurance from the government on the safety of their children and teachers silently supported it.

Diminishing strength

Parents are not willing to send their children to school owing to the fear of attack by wild animals. The teachers were also struck by fear. While a section of them go on leave, others manage to get transfers to other schools.

The teachers said representations for a compound wall or relocating the school were made often to the authorities concerned. But no protective measures had been taken so far.

The fear is that the school will be closed soon because of the dwindling student strength.

Another reason for students not coming to the class is the inadequate bus service.

Students cannot not take the risk of walking because of the threat from wild animals.
