Haribalu increases lead

CHENNAI: V. Haribalu defeated former State champion Ram S. Krishnan and increased his lead with eight points after as many rounds in the Velammal State FIDE-rated chess championship, here on Friday.

Following the leader are J. Arun, S.S. Manigandan and State u-25 champion P. Saravana Krishnan with seven points each.

The results:

Eighth round: Ram S. Krishnan (6.5) lost to V. Haribalu (8); S. Ganesh Babu (6.5) drew with Narayanan Srinath (6.5); B. Sekar (6) lost to P. Saravana Krishnan (7).

P. Maheswaran (6.5) drew with M. Paramasivam (6.5); P. Lokesh (6.5) drew with S. Prasannaa (6.5); M.V. Lakshmi Narayanan (6.5) drew with N.R. Visakh (6.5); K.G. Chaithanyaa (6) lost to J. Arun (7); G. Jaswant (6.5) drew with J. Nishvin (6.5).

V.S. Sakthivel Pandian (6) lost to S.S. Manigandan (7); G. Akash (6.5) bt J. Eshwanth Dev Kumar (5.5); B. Kumaran (5.5) lost to Akash PC. Iyer (6.5); A.L. Palaniappan (6.5) bt R. Divya Lakshmi (5.5).

Rahul scalps five

Rahul (five for eight) helped MAS CA defeat Pace CA by three wickets in the Singaram Pillay u-12 cricket tournament.

AVM CCF 150 for five in 25 overs (Ram Aravind 37) bt Loyola CA 70 in 21 overs; Khan's CA 170 for five in 25 overs (Adnan Khan 45) bt Singaram Pillay 129 for nine in 25 overs (Md..Suhail 37, Tushar three for 18); Budding Stars CA 126 for eight in 25 overs (Aditya 30 n.o.) bt MAS CA 120 in 25 overs; Pace CA 108 for nine in 25 overs (S. Vibeesh 25, Rahul five for eight) lost to MAS CA 109 for seven in 23 overs (Sri Hari four for 10); Loyola CA 73 for eight in 25 overs bt Swaraj CA 76 without loss in 10.4 overs (Shyam Sundar 25, Sriram Balaji 31) .

Chess championship

The State u-17 open and girls' chess championship will be held at Rajapalayam from June 13 to 18.

The event is open to registered players of the State and born on or after January 1, 1994. Entry fee is Rs. 250 for open, donor entry fee Rs. 500 and for girls Rs. 450.
