MCD aldermen take oath after all

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: A week after being prevented from taking oath because of a ruckus at the Municipal Corporation of Delhi House meeting, the 10 aldermen nominated to the civic agency by the Delhi Lieutenant-Governor were finally sworn-in on Friday.

At the last House meeting on May 20, the BJP members had raised slogans against selection of the 10 persons as aldermen leading to adjournment of the meeting. After the meeting was adjourned, former Mayor and Congress councillor Farhad Suri had held an unofficial swearing-in ceremony as a mark of protest.

Following the incident, a BJP delegation had met Lieutenant-Governor Tejendra Khanna who reportedly directed the MCD to ensure that the nominated members were sworn-in.

An alderman is a member of a municipal council who is not elected by popular vote. Under the Delhi Municipal (DMC) Act, the Lieutenant-Governor can nominate 10 eminent persons as aldermen to the MCD following recommendation by the Delhi Government.

‘Eligibility'

MCD Leader of House Subhash Arya had earlier said: “The nominated members are just Congress workers and their nomination has been made keeping in view the municipal elections next year. To be nominated as aldermen, people needed knowledge about administration of local bodies or expertise in some field and the people chosen have neither.”

The 10 people who have been appointed as aldermen are Parvez Mian, Komalam Nair, Sudesh Sangwan, Abdul Qayyum, S K Puri, H. K. Jindal, L. C. Chandelia, Sanjay Ghaloth, S. S. Duggal and Yogesh Kumar Chaudhary.
