Parvathy Puthanar canal to be cleaned

Thiruvananthapuram: The State government will take steps to clean up the Parvathy Puthanar canal and construct a 3-km retaining wall from Chakkai to Vazhavila, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said here on Saturday.

He said this after a visit to the site where a school van had plunged into the polluted canal, killing six schoolchildren and a caretaker in February this year. The District Collector had earlier submitted a preliminary report on the accident, recommending steps to clean up the canal and construct a retaining wall. The Collector was asked to submit a detailed report by Monday. Mr. Chandy said the Cabinet would accord sanction to the two projects.

The Chief Minister also visited the house of Irfan, a student who sustained serious injuries in the accident. He said the government would foot the expenses for the treatment of the child.

Transport Minister V.S. Sivakumar, M.A. Vahid, MLA, District Collector Dinesh Arora and officers of various departments accompanied Mr. Chandy.
