Bangalore: In an operation that lasted less than 12 hours, the Upparpet police secured the release of a man who had been abducted at around 1.30 p.m. on Saturday from S.C Road in Majestic. Ramnath Naik, a tax consultant from Uttara Kannada district, was abducted in broad daylight by a five-member gang that included a woman while he was speaking on his cellphone. Mr. Naik, who was lured toward the getaway vehicle by the woman, was dragged in by the others and driven away, the police said. They claimed the gang then contacted Srinivas Naik, a friend of the victim, and demanded a Rs. 6 lakh ransom for his safe release. However, by the time the ransom call was made, the police had already received a missing complaint from Mr. Srinivas Naik. The ransom call was tracked and the police located the abductors in the Attibele area by around midnight. In the rescue operation that ensued, one policeman sustained superficial injuries after he was attacked by one of the abductors, who was later nabbed and identified as Vasanth. The rest of the gang has been identified as Sudha Naidu, Gajendra, Mohan and Lakshmikanth. Sources however told The Hindu the victim was not abducted for ransom and the money that the abductors were demanding was an outstanding debt. Betting racket The Kengeri police raided a house in Omkarnagar during the IPL Finals on Saturday and busted a cricket betting racket that was being run illegally. The raid led to the arrest of five persons from Mandya, who have been identified as Kumar (27), Chetan (23), Kiran (25), Santosh (26) and Suresh (28).
