Encroachers to be sternly dealt with

Chitradurga: Municipal Commissioner Vijay Kumar on Monday said that the municipality would not hesitate to take stringent action against encroachers.

Speaking at the general body meeting here, Mr. Kumar said that all encroachments would be cleared, irrespective of the encroachers' social status.

He, however, sought the cooperation of all the councillors for the drive against encroachment.

“It is difficult to remove encroachments without the support of the councillors as many people use political influence to escape action,” he said.

Several councillors expressed support for the move.

Earlier, councillor Jabbar took serious exception to what he described as the failure of the municipality to provide electricity to those living in slums.

He said that despite bringing the matter to the notice of the municipality a month ago, neither president Sunita Mallikarjun nor the Commissioner had addressed the problem.

“Why are you reluctant to address slum dwellers' problems? When the municipality can spend huge amount on various projects, why can it not spend about Rs. 40,000 on providing electricity to slums,” he asked.

He demanded that Ms. Mallikarjun and Mr. Kumar take immediate action. He was later promised by the former that the problem would soon be addressed.

Referring to the ban on plastic bags of less than 40 microns as ordered by the Supreme Court, Ms. Mallikarjun said that an extensive awareness campaign had been undertaken to educate vendors and wholesale dealers about the Supreme Court order. “We are also urging the people to use jute bags,” she said.
